Vessel Traffic Risk Assessment (VTRA)
The VTRA project commenced in June 2006 and spanned over a period of two years. The primary purpose for the VTRA project was to consider accident risk to vessels docking at the BP Cherry Point, Washington dock with the intent of incorporating the results in the Section 10 permit EIS for the addition of a north dock to the BP Cherry Point facility. Over the course of the project a comprehensive maritime risk management analysis tool was also developed for the VTRA study area that includes the approaches to and passages through the San Juan Islands, Puget Sound, Haro-Strait/Boundary Pass and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The project was funded by BP and performed by a team from The George Washington University, Rensselaer Polytechnic University and Virginia Commonwealth University.
Throughout the project, the Puget Sound Harbor Safety Committee (PSHSC) served as the forum for the project team to seek input and to provide periodic progress reports. With the public release of the VTRA, the final report to the PSHSC was made on Friday, April 27, 2012. The report can be found at VTRA Report.
